Exclusive LUTs give Nikon owners a little bit of RED magic
Upgrade your N-Log video with RED’s famed colour science
Nikon mirrorless camera owners* can now enjoy a little bit of RED cinema camera magic, with four exclusive creative LUTs and one technical LUT to transform your video output.
For the uninitiated, an LUT (lookup table) is a kind of preset for video editing. It is a set of numbers that convert things such as brightness, hue and colour across a piece of video and make grading easier.
Developed in partnership between Nikon and RED, the new LUTs make available four unique looks for footage, harnessing RED’s colour science, which is used across the international film and television industry.
The LUTs are used with N-Log 10-bit footage and are compatible with the Nikon Z9, Z8, Z6III and Zf.
Perfect for editing your footage with a truly cinematic look, the LUTs can also be installed on an external monitor while you shoot so you can see the effect, whereas looking at N-Log footage on the camera monitor can appear very flat.
The Achromic LUT adds a classic, low-contrast, soft monochrome look that preserves details and textures. This emphasis of shape and texture over colour makes it a great choice for artistic black and white footage.
Film Bias produces a natural look with balanced colours and skin tones, and as such is a great starting point for a multitude of styles and scenes. Cinematic and organic, it will transform footage of a sunny day at the beach, for example.
Film Bias Bleach Bypass gives a high-contrast desaturated look, which emulates the old film technique of skipping the bleach part of the film development process. This essentially leaves a black and white image on top of a colour one, creating a dramatic and truly cinematic look, with intense realism.
Film Bias Offset is a vintage-style film look with subtle warmth, great for landscapes and cityscapes with a retro feel (think early 1960s Las Vegas!).
The new Technical LUT offers updates and improvements to the existing N-Log LUTs, with colours optimised in line with RED’s colour science. Improvements include reduced highlight saturation, suppressed saturation and contrast, and it is easier to use when editing, converting the RED colour space to Rec.709.
All the LUTs are free to download here.
*LUTs are for use with N-Log video and can be used with the Nikon Z9, Z8, Z6III and Zf only.
